Which are the best viewpoints to see the Cíes Islands?

The beauty and natural value of the Cíes Islands is unrivalled. That’s why most people that come to the Rias Baixas on holiday don’t hesitate to visit them. Meanwhile, others decide to visit the best viewpoints of the coast, to admire them from afar. This is because seeing the sun hiding behind these beautiful islands that remain passive in the Atlantic Ocean is a real spectacle. Without a doubt, from these viewpoints, you will be able to enjoy the best sunsets in the world. Would you like to know which ones they are? We’ll tell you!

Monte de O Castro

Mont O Castro is the place in Vigo with the most spectacular views. At 149 metres high, we will find the highest point of the city, and that’s why its views are enviable. The viewpoint boasts stunning views of both the city and the Vigo ria and its surroundings. From there, you can see the great city at the foot of the hill, the Cíes Islands to the west and the hills of the O Morrazo peninsula opposite. Additionally, at the bottom of the hill, you can see an Iron Age archaeological site where the first inhabitants of the city once lived, between the third and first centuries BC.

Punta Subrido

Punta Subrido is one of the places with the best views of the entire coast that surrounds the Vigo ria and is the nearest point to the Cíes Islands. For that reason, it has become one of the best natural viewpoints facing the islands and the Pacific ocean. 

This place also features some spectacular cliffs and hiking routes that cross Cabo Home, discovering numerous lighthouses and superb landscapes. Without a doubt, it is worth going to see. 

The best way to get there is by car, although parking is sometimes a challenge, there is a small car park where you will be able to leave your vehicle if you arrive early.

Paseo de Alfonso Viewpoint

The Paseo de Alfonso viewpoint is situated in the heart of Vigo. From there, you can enjoy spectacular views of the Vigo ria and, in the background, you will be able to glimpse the Cíes Islands. It is one of the best parts of the city to see the Cies from and admire its spectacular sunsets. In addition, it boasts a privileged location which enables you to reach the city’s historic quarter quickly. Here, you will be able to discover the landmarks of the city such as Vigo’s Co-Cathedral of Santa María (Concatedral de Santa María) and try the area’s typical delicacies.

Monte de O Cepudo Viewpoint

Monte O Cepudo is one of the mountains that surrounds the city of Vigo and which faces the sea. At 527 metres high, this mountain offers spectacular views of the Vigo ria. From there, you will be able to see the small island of Toralla near to the coast, the Cíes Islands at the entrance to the ria and the northwest coast of the Rias Baixas in the background.

Monte O Cepudo is the ideal spot to relax in while you enjoy the fabulous views that our coasts offer you. 

Paseo dos Peixes

In the neighbourhood of Bouzas, in Vigo, there is a beautiful seafront promenade with some incredible views. From there, you will be able to see views of the Vigo ria, the coast of O Morrazo and the Cíes Islands. It is the ideal place to take an enjoyable stroll and enjoy the breeze of the ria, while you delight in the beauty of the coast. 

This pedestrian path surrounds the centre of Bouzas, it stretches more than two kilometres and is adorned with various sculptures of different fish and other marine animals. At the end of the promenade, you will have to turn around to go back home, since it only has an exit on one side. 

In addition, if you enjoy bike riding, this is the ideal place for you. They have installed a bike lane that stretches for more than one kilometre. 

Samil Beach

Samil beach is an urban beach situated in Vigo which has a wide and long promenade that you can walk along or sit on to enjoy the spectacular sunsets in the Atlantic Ocean with the Cíes Islands as a backdrop. In good weather, many locals come to Samil beach to relax or walk while they enjoy these incredible views. If you are going to visit the city, this is one of the must-visit places, in summer and any time of year. 

Alto do Príncipe Viewpoint (Cíes Islands)

The Alto do Principe viewpoint is situated at the highest point of the Cíes Islands. Since it is situated on one side, from this viewpoint you will be able to see all of the islands in their full glory. Only visitors to the Cíes Islands have access to this spectacular viewpoint. To reach it, you will need to book your ticket at the Mar de Ons ferry company and ask for a permit from the Xunta de Galicia (Galician Government) during the months of the high season (Easter and summer). If you are travelling with us to the Cíes Islands, you will be able to discover this and other viewpoints that can be reached via various natural paths on the island.
